Last night the phantom nerve pain began. It doesn’t seem very phantom:(

Of course, I had no idea that was what it was until I scoured the forums here in the wee hours of the morning. She began to act as if something was hurting her and would shriek in pain and try to get away from it, which is really nerve-wracking with the other arm already broken.

After reading a bunch of the helpful responses on the forum, I called the vet and she was immediately started on Gabepentin. Her vet said that she was given a nerve blocker prior to surgery that would’ve lasted a few days and it has now been 3 days.  After giving it to her she has improved quite a bit already. Although, she has been really lethargic all morning….and afternoon.

I really hoping she adjusts to the medicine soon, and I hope she has a better night. Such a sweet little girl 🙂

NALA, DEAR SWEET NALA!! So glad your vet got her started on Gabapentin…it really should help…may take a dose or two.

Some have said just gently, very gently cupping your hand over the site can help. Just talking to her, trying to reassure her, anything to help divert her attention. Generally.the phantom.pain “attacks” are brief and come and go quickly. Of course, it still hurts like crazy.when it happens!

You really, really n have your hands full and I salute you…and Nala too! A great team! Try and sleep when she sleeps, rest is pretty sparse at first. Hang in there! You are doing an incredible job in the face of huge hurdles!

Keep us posted! We’re all here with you!

    Hugs!

I’m glad your vet reacting so quickly to Nala’s needs! The importance of a supportive vet working with our pups/kitties and us on this journey is so important.
Like Sally said – sleep when she does – it really will get better and these hurdles will be a memory – but for now remember to take care of yourself too.

    Hugs

I’m sorry you went through this but I agree, it’s awesome that your vet reacted quickly. Gaba can make some dogs sleepy. I hope she can adjust to it too. Keep us posted! Hope your weekend is going well and she’s healing nicely.
